Unfortunately, on Tuesday night, September 22, Lawrence Peter Berra, better known as Yogi, passed away at the age of 90.

He was known for his clutch homeruns and MVPs. He was known for his interesting quotes. Most of all, Yogi Berra was known as one the kindest, most wholesome people to step onto the diamond. Berra was born on May 12, 1925 in St. Louis and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Berra is seen as one of the most inspirational people in the past few decades.

Berra’s baseball career started off when he was twenty-one years old. Just five years into his career, Berra won the first of his three Most Valuable Player awards. Throughout his career, Berra was elected to a whopping eighteen all-star games as a catcher and an outfielder. Berra spent nineteen years in the majors, eighteen with the Yankees, and one with the Mets and was arguably the best catcher in major league history.

After his years as a player, Berra became a coach in the majors. He started out as the manager of the Yankees coaching them to the AL Pennant, and then a World Series victory in his first year, 1964. Then, he appeared in another World Series with the Yankees cross-town rivals, the New York Mets in 1973. Although he did not win with the Mets, Berra is the only manager to have managed both the Yankees and Mets to the World Series. Berra definitely made his mark on Major League Baseball.

During and after his career, Berra articulated some of the most motivating and thought-provoking quotes. Berra once said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Berra also coined the saying,

Yogi Berra was an American icon and the image of a baseball player. He has inspired many with his quotes and amazing accomplishments. He will be remembered and honored by baseball and others around the country. Berra had a love for the game and a love of people. Yogi will be missed by the country and by baseball.
