One of the most eventful, suspenseful, and impactful days in any sport is the trade deadline—the final day that trades can be made. This year, the NFL trade deadline took place on Tuesday, November 4th. There were countless controversial trades for teams all across the country, making for one of the most monumental deadlines in modern history.
Typically, teams begin making deadline moves about a week before the final day. Over the course of that week, tons of moves are made. However, football usually has a less exciting trade deadline than sports like basketball and baseball. It was looking as if that would be the case again this year.
Until…
On November 4th, the day of the trade deadline, the New York Jets made a blockbuster move, sending superstar cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in return for a first-round draft pick this year, a first-round draft pick next year, and 23-year-old wide receiver, AD Mitchell. In a stunning turn of events, the trade deadline went from putting the “dead” in deadline to being one of the most vivacious moves since Christian McCaffrey was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022.
Just a few hours later, the New York Jets made another astonishing trade, sending superstar defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys in return for a second-round draft pick this year, a first-round draft pick next year, and 24-year-old defensive tackle, Mazi Smith. So, over the course of about two hours, the Jets went from having one of the best defenses on paper in the league and a horrible 1-7 record to a significantly worse defense, with 5 first-round picks in the next two years, and still a horrible 1-7 record.
While this deadline was mainly driven by the Jets fire sale, many other teams made moves to strengthen their rosters at the deadline as well.
The Patriots dealt former second-round safety Kyle Dugger to the Pittsburgh Steelers. After Dugger had an outstanding 2020 NFL Draft Combine, the Patriots struggled to find him a secure spot on the defense. While the Patriots failed to develop Dugger, the hard-hitting safety will have an opportunity to bring this Steelers defense over the top.
The Jets and Eagles swapped young studs as the Jets got 25-year-old WR John Metchie III, giving the Eagles 26-year-old Nickelback Michael Carter II. Metchie has had opportunities with both Houston and Philly, but has yet to emerge as a top guy in an offense, despite his extraordinary speed. Michael Carter II was a very solid corner for New York, but with the defensive fire sale that the Jets had, adding some youth offensively was solid value.
The Eagles also landed former Packer superstar Jaire Alexander from the Baltimore Ravens. The former All-Pro corner played his best staps in Green Bay, but having been out of his prime for a little while now, the Ravens signed him in the offseason and traded him shortly after. The Eagles, with this move, make it clear that they desire a deeper cornerback room.
The Eagles also managed to snag 26-year-old edge rusher Jaelan Phillips from the Miami Dolphins in return for a third-round pick. Phillips was a stud pass rusher before he unfortunately blew out his Achilles against the Jets in 2023, followed by tearing his ACL just a year later. The former first-round pick was a standout at the University of Miami, but the injuries seriously killed his career. Only time will tell if his tenure with Philly will show his true potential.
The Dallas Cowboys were able to add to their defense by adding middle linebacker Logan Wilson from a struggling Cincinnati defense. The Cowboys got off to a disappointing start to the season, giving up Micah Parsons before the season got underway. These additions to the defense are showing some signs of uncertainty in Jerry’s World, but the additions of Wilson and Quinnen Williams could mark some changes in Dallas.
The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired former Patriots receiver Jakoby Myers from the Las Vegas Raiders. With rookie standout Travis Hunter going down to a season-ending knee injury, the Jags needed a solid receiver if they wanted to continue competing in the AFC South. Myers is a great guy to fill the Hunter role by being an above-average route runner with not quite game-changing speed, but close to it.
The New Orleans Saints dealt speedy wide receiver Rasheed Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks. The emergence of Sam Darnold and this Seattle offense has been highlighted by the play of rising star wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Shaheed, who is one of the fastest and most explosive receivers in the game, was able to make big plays with Spencer Rattler and the disappointing Saints offense. In Seattle, he has the opportunity to reach his full potential and really bring the Seahawks’ offense over the top.
Overall, a very eventful 2025 trade deadline really showed what owners and GMs think about their current rosters, which could completely change the outlook of the league entering the homestretch of the regular season and into the playoff push.
