On Friday April 5, 2024 at approximately 10:23 am, an earthquake occurred in New Jersey. It had a magnitude of 4.8 and its effects could be felt from Maine to Maryland. The earthquake itself took place near the Ramapo Fault. This was the strongest earthquake in New Jersey in the past 240 years. The damage was minimal. Most people only experienced some broken dishes in their homes from the shaking. However, there were some homes in Newark, New Jersey that needed to be evacuated in fear of problems with the structure of the houses. There continues to be a high amount of aftershocks in the days following the earthquake. There were about 65 aftershocks of much smaller magnitude than the original earthquake. Most people did not even feel the aftershocks.
In New York City, they had to halt travel at Kennedy Airport until they could assess if there was damage on the runway. Similarly, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels had to be briefly closed due to inspections. Finally, New Jersey Transit and the New York Subway System also needed to be delayed for inspections. Thankfully, no transportation systems were damaged in the earthquake.
