My Mother

Elizabeth Saada

I want to be like my mother

My mother is the sun

Who is bright and beautiful

Who warms people’s hearts

I want to be like my mother

My mother is the river

Who is calm and easy going

Who provides peace and life

I want to be like my mother

My mother is the oak tree

Who is tall and mighty.

Who protects and cares for others

I want to be like my mother

My mother is the wind

Who is powerful and free

Who brings fun and light during dark days

I want to be like my mother

But my mother is in danger

She’s dying at the hands of her children

And no one seems to care

The sun is dying

Once bright and beautiful

Now shallow and dark

My mother is dying

The river is dying

Once lively and calm

Now poisoned and clogged

My mother is dying

The oak tree is dying

Once tall and strong

Now fallen and weak

My mother is dying

The wind is dying

Once wild and free

Now angry and restrained

Our mother needs help

She is relying on her children

Relying on us to fix our ways

We can save our mother
