After two long years, people are still getting sick from Covid and to help combat this, vaccines were developed. The newest of these vaccines is the second booster shot for people over the age of 50. This shot was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) on March 29. Previously, this second booster shot was only available for immunocompromised individuals. This is important because studies have shown that receiving booster shots decrease the likelihood of death from Covid. Specifically, a study done in Israel found that people over 60 who had gotten a second booster shot had a lower death rate than those who had only received one booster shot. Also, both Pfizer and Moderna are working on developing vaccines that are targeted towards specific variants of Covid. Both companies are trying to make a vaccine for the omicron variant. In addition, Moderna is testing a shot that would cover both the delta and omicron variants.
A similar development to fight against Covid has been the creation of medications to help people once they contract Covid. Recently, a new drug, called sabizabulin, has gone through clinical trials. Sabizabulin is an anti-inflammatory and anti-viral drug that is meant to help people who are moderately or severely sick from Covid. Their clinical trials went so well that they decided to stop them early. The trial showed that with this medicine, the chance of death from severe Covid dropped from 45% to 20%. These results have caused Vru, the company that makes sabizabulin, to file for emergency-use authorization of the medicine from the FDA. If it is approved, the drug would be available in a few months. There are currently other drugs like this being tested by other companies as well. Hopefully with the addition of more vaccines and more medications, the number of people getting Covid will decrease and the number of people dying from Covid will decrease as well.
