What’s Going On In Afghanistan?
October 11, 2021
Since 9/11, United States military troops have been located in Afghanistan in order to keep peace within the country. After being there for almost 20 years with little impact, the United States has decided to pull out of the country. With this, Afghanistan’s government collapsed and the Taliban, a terrorist group, took over in Kabul, the capital city. The Taliban currently has strict control and power over Afghans causing these individuals to evacuate. United States military troops have been trying to advise this evacuation as there are thousands who need to escape. Many U.S. military planes are being put to the use of gathering Afghan immigrants from Kabul and bringing them to the United States. Unfortunately, many Afghans have not been able to escape Kabul due to disapproval of an immigrant, not enough room on the planes, or that some have already been killed. Statistics show that about 47,245 Afghans and about 2,448 United States military members have died. About 6,000 Afghans have been evacuated from Afghanistan. President Biden of the United States is working in order to protect these individuals from being harmed and making sure that the U.S. military makes it out safely.
In order to enter the United States to become a U.S. citizen, one must have a visa card that clears them for entry. However, many Afghans are struggling to receive these cards as they take time to get. Therefore, many Afghans have waited or are still waiting days or even months just to get a clearance. Airports in Kabul have become overcrowded and dangerous due to this backup. Fortunately, some Afghans have been able to receive special visas in order to enter. There are few of these opportunities, but Americans are working hard to pull the people they have connections to, out of the country, and into the United States.
