On November 28, 2016, a wildfire hit Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Two juveniles, who supposedly started the deadly blaze at the Chimney Tops Trial on November 23, 2016, were arrested and charged with arson. The fire swelled inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park before striking Gatlinburg, taking lives, and damaging property.

Strong winds, with speeds near 90 mph, contributed to the quick dispersal of the fire, making its effects even more disastrous. Over 14,000 people were evacuated, but some did not receive these warnings until after the fire had spread to their areas. Those evacuated had to leave with only the clothes they were wearing as the fire damaged their homes and other belongings. Many shelters were established to assist the evacuees. Worried families have been searching for missing loved ones who were in the vicinity of the wildfire when it hit.

Approximately 14 people passed away and numerous people lost their homes. More than 2,400 buildings were harmed or completely demolished in the flames. Gatlinburg’s Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort and Spa, numerous churches, the Castle, and Cupid’s Chapel of Love were severely damaged. Dolly Parton’s renowned theme park, Dollywood had an evacuation, but the park was unharmed.

Recently, Asheville Fire Explorers were accepting donations for Gatlinburg at Asheville Fire Station. Brevard College students held a donation drive to collect items for the victims of the wildfire. Other locals began collecting donations for those affected, as well.

Recently, residents were able to return to their homes permanently. Hopefully damage can be repaired soon so the citizens of Gatlinburg can revert back to their normal lives.
