Fantastic Beasts Delivers on a Magical Adventure

David Yates, who also directed the last four Harry Potter films, has returned to make Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Taking place 70 years before the events of Potter, J.K. Rowling uses this unique setting to launch her screenwriting debut.

Rowling’s tale revolves around wizarding-outsider Newt Scamander. Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, arrives in New York City. Newt has made it his quest to collect and nurture these feared magical creatures. While many want to eradicate them from existence, Newt believes if he connects with these beasts he can show other witches and wizards that they are not dangerous.fantasticbeastsandwheretofindthem

Once again, Yates shows why he is perfect for this universe. He pulls in the audience with his heavy and impactful action sequences. More importantly, he gradually builds his characters, making us care deeply for each one.

Fantastic Beasts stands on its own as a film. Although tied into the other Potter films, Rowling does not rely on the previous films. Fantastic Beasts is its own movie that can be enjoyed by any viewer because it does not rely heavily on call-backs and our appreciation of Harry Potter.

The acting was excellent. Redmayne was superb as Newt Scamander. He nailed the idiosyncrasies of Newt and was extremely vulnerable and lovable. Dan Fogler as Jacob Kawolski was a comic-relief character. The jokes landed and Rowling avoided Kawolski acting in the annoying side-kick role. Tina, played by Katherine Waterston, is investigating the strange happenings around New York City. She’s a character that is easy to sympathize with immediately.fb1

The drawbacks of Fantastic Beasts are minimal. Some of the CGI is a bit jarring. There is a lot of CGI and some of it is a bit too much. Also, there are a few scenes loaded with exposition.

Rowling’s latest wizarding installment sets up this new world while also stirring excitement for future installments. The adventures of Scamander will continue with four more movies to come, which will explore the past of Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindlewald. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an engaging story that builds upon the pure joy and magic of Harry Potter.
