Our Town Takes the MHS Stage
November 30, 2016
After two months of dedication and hard work, the cast of Our Town performed for audiences this past week. Starring Corinne Lynch, Patrick Murray, Emma Lewis, Brooke Schindelheim, and Lizzy Friedman, the show’s five performances were truly a successful hit. Set in a small New England town in the early twentieth century, the play written by Thornton Wilder highlights the importance of appreciating one’s daily life while they live it. The show “breaks the fourth wall” and has the Stage Manager (Lynch) directly speaking to the audience. The story centers around George Gibbs (Murray) and Emily Webb (Lewis) and both of their families’ experiences as they live their lives as well as some special occasions, like marriage and death.
This famous and memorable show has been the most produced high school production in America since shortly after it opened. Also loved by English teachers around the country, the story has many deeper meaning and themes to it, such as appreciating the present, human connections, and the transience of human life.
For the MHS production, director, Anthony Greco, wanted the performances to be intimate and have the audience be constantly engaged. For these reasons, the audience was seated on the stage, only a few feet away from the actors. Doing this created a one-on-one feel for each and every audience member and a way to make the story seem more realistic. With around twenty students in the cast, this production had a pretty large cast for Our Town, giving room for more students to experience the opportunity of participating in a school show, and especially one as brilliant and deep as Our Town. The Drama Club will be putting on a musical, Crazy for You, at the end of March.
