World Series Recap
December 1, 2015
After a hard fought and suspenseful five game series, the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Mets. The aggressive attack at the plate of the Royals was too much to handle for the young flame-throwing pitching staff of the Mets. The Royals won their first World Series title since 1985. The runner-up New York Mets made their first World Series since 1986 and shocked the league with their success. It only took five games for the Royals to become the champions of the world.
Game one immediately started off with excitement. The Mets were leading 3-1 off of a Curtis Granderson Solo Homerun and RBIs from Travis D’Arnaud and Michael Conforto. Matt Harvey was still pitching for the Mets heading into the sixth inning and looked to put the game away. The Royals had other plans tying up the ballgame 3-3. In the eighth inning, Wilmer Flores hit a slow roller to first baseman Eric Hosmer which got by him scoring the go-ahead run from third. The Mets were ever confident in their lights-out closer Jeurys Familia to finish the game. Familia was two outs away when Alex Gordon hit a Solo Homerun to tie the game and send it into extras. In the fourteenth inning, Eric Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly, driving in the winning run. Kansas City took Game one 5-4 in fourteen innings.
Game two, however, was a different story. The starting pitcher for the Royals, Johnny Cueto, performed to an astonishing ability. Cueto pitched complete game 2 hitter. On the other side of the field, Jacob DeGrom, starting for the Mets, did not have the usual control and swings and misses of his pitches. New York just did not have it and Kansas City ended up with a 7-1 victory in game two.
Game three was played in Citi Field, in front of a New York crowd louder than ever. Noah Syndergaard was pitching for the Mets and had one of his best games in his early rookie campaign notching six brilliant innings leading the Mets to the win. The Captain, David Wright, had a great day at the plate, bringing in 4 runs and did so with a home run and a single. Curtis Granderson added a home run as well pushing the Mets to a 9-3 victory bringing the series to a 2-1 Kansas City lead.
Game four was again a collapse by the Mets. Rookie Steven Matz pitched in five innings of work and the Mets’ defense held on. The score was 3-2 Mets heading into the eighth inning when the Mets bullpen blew another game. The Royals attacked for three runs in the inning putting them in place to win game six. Even though Rookie Michael Conforto had two Solo home runs in the same game, the Royals won game 6 and extended their series lead to 3-1.
Game five was put back into the hands of Matt Harvey. Harvey was absolutely perfect through eight innings shutting down the Royals. With the Mets leading 2-0 heading into the ninth, Manager of the Mets, Terry Collins, was set to put his closer Jeurys Familia in the game, whom has had a rough World Series. Matt Harvey expressed his desire to be placed back in the game and was. This proved to be a poor decision when Harvey allowed the Royals to score one and put the tying run on second base. The Royals ended up tying the game in the ninth and pushing the game into extra innings. Then later, Kansas City scored 5 in the top of the twelfth, icing the game. The Royals won game five of the World Series crowning them Champions. It was an exciting World Series and the Royals’ aggressive style of hitting outplayed the pitching talent of the Mets.
