Bridges

Eden Aulov

Did you find comfort in your malice?

Baby, that’s an ugly look on your twisted face,

An ugly outfit on your toned body,

An ugly smile on your cut-up heart.

You find comfort in your laughter?

Broken bell towers ringing loud?

Baby, that’s an ugly sound you make,

Screeches of jealousy, I, like a coroner,

Identify.

Oh, the gossip,

Pages of text,

Novels and words swimming through hallways.

Your jealousy makes you hideous,

Hidden words, but not too hidden;

Enough so I know,

So we know, bored,

We’re indicted.

As if our frozen tears quench your thirst,

As if our designs and smiles feed your hollow stomach,

As if you can’t let go of malicious words about us,

Well, we cannot care.

We cannot

Dare to,

Ferocious, we can only stew,

Funny how we would end you if

We weren’t cowards.

Fools, reputational,

Thinking about our futures, about alliances, kindnesses

If we weren’t kind you couldn’t walk us like bridges.

Our kind would break under your soiled legs,

Send you falling into hateful ditches,

Our reputations are already in

Their depths.

Say what you will! I beg

Say it, I need life or

We are not alive.

Right?

We cannot be alive without crocodiles,

Snapping at our depths,

Our bridges unaware until they have a bite taken

Out of them.

One day, my bridge will have had enough.

I will snap.

You will fall;

We fall with you.
