Since February 24, two weeks ago, Russia has been invading its neighboring land of Ukraine. Across the world, there are prayers being said for those who are trying to escape. Some question: Why is this occurring? What’s really going on? What can I do to help? Along with the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, there was hope that Russia would gain parts of Ukraine through invasion. Historically, Ukraine was a part of Russia. However, over time Ukraine became independent. Still, Russians feel that Ukraine is to be a part of the country. So, the Russian military started the attacks in a certain area that would get them closer to the capital city of Kyiv over time. Immediately, people became endangered and started to evacuate. Thousands of individuals are taking their families and bringing them to the train stations for shelter and escape. Before there was ability of transportation, people were sheltering themselves with families and pets in the train stations or bomb shelters. Men who are 18 years of age or older are not allowed out of the country as they must help to defend Ukraine. Others do not have anywhere to go to or are stuck in their homes. Unfortunately, many of these people have been hurt or even killed and were not able to escape. As bombing are still occuring frequently, neighboring places such as Poland are trying to support these migrating Ukranians. Poland’s individuals are going as far to welcome refugees into their own homes. Though, with little room in Poland cities, Ukranians are having to travel to other places.

Millions of Americans along with others around the world have been donating whatever they can to Ukranians. Americans have been collecting items such as old clothing, blankets, toothbrushes, strollers, diapers, or anything else able to help Ukrainans in this difficult time. Thousands of heart breaking experiences and stories have been shared by Ukrainian people each day. Additionally, many Ukranian Americans have spoken up as their families are struggling during this time. Experts are unsure of what the outcome of this war will bring next, but help is expected to continue by the world around Ukraine.
