Across the duration of the night on Friday, December 10, 2021, western Kentucky was struck by four devastating tornadoes. Areas such as Mayfield and Bowling Green were struck with violent winds reaching up to and surpassing 200 mph, adding to the rapidly increasing death toll. The evaluation of destruction consisted of the collapsing of numerous towns and buildings, including a candle factory located in Mayfield. Towns that were met with the wrath of these tornadoes were left in ruins, leaving behind dozens of casualties.

What is being done in response to the situation?

Amidst the debris are bodies and living people that still haven’t been found, leaving the first priority to rescue squads. Several emergency aid operations are also being held in response to the destruction, such as the providing of food and sheltering to victims held by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Furthermore, President Biden is planning to assist those affected by the tragedy by providing supplies and eventually financial aid. Currently, surrounding communities are also contributing to the cause by sifting through debris and reporting any bodies found.

As of now, as constant updates are still being made, decisive conclusions regarding the death toll and intensities of the tornadoes still cannot be made—only leaving the possibility of an even higher casualty count while dozens are still not yet confirmed.
