So what is The Umbrella Academy? It gathered a lot of attention recently when new episodes were released on Netflix earlier this summer, but the story has been around for a long time. Gerard Way, lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance, wrote the first volume of The Umbrella Academy comic book series in 2007-2008, releasing a second and third volume in 2008 and 2019, respectively. In 2017, Netflix announced that the comics would be turned into a ten episode show, which later became twenty episodes due to their season two renewal. 

The story starts in 1989, when 43 children are born randomly, to people not pregnant moments earlier. A famous tycoon adopts seven of these children, six of whom have supernatural powers. He forms the “Umbrella Academy”, which is essentially the name of these six powerful children; he puts them through practices to try and teach them to control/use these powers, and they help solve problems in their community. Years later, these adopted siblings reconnect over their father’s death, and they have a new task to conquer; the end of the world. The series follows as these siblings try to determine how the world ends and how to stop it, while dealing with issues in their personal life along the way. I think that it is a really interesting story, and the TV show did a great job portraying the characters and the set design is really impressive. The soundtrack of the show is also really well thought out, and the music choices are very thoughtful.

Thankfully, fans have more to look forward to. In the afternoon of November 10, it was announced that production for the third season would begin in February 2021. It is unsure when season three will be released; an ideal date would be late 2021, but there is no definitive date. Due to covid-19 causing everything to move slowly, possible postponing, and the long process of actually filming the season, it is likely that it will be a while before new episodes appear, but who knows what the future holds? Fingers crossed for a smooth opening of Umbrella Academy: Season Three!
