The race for New Jersey’s new governor ended November 7, 2017 when Democrat Phil Murphy carried the majority of the votes cast, defeating Republican Kim Guadagno by an unofficial tally of 1,154,978 to 878,588. Phil Murphy was expected to win this election from the start. According to NJ Advance Media’s analysis of the unofficial election results, 196 towns that had in the last election voted Republican now voted Democrat, while no towns that had voted Democrat changed to Republican.

While in office, Governor-to-be Murphy plans to support women’s rights, equality for the LGBTQ community, and provide NJ Driver and Non-Driver ID’s to “Dreamers” and other undocumented residents. He also plans to improve New Jersey’s economy through creating new infrastructure like rebuilding and repairing the NJ Transit rail system. He wants to help protect the environment by cleaning up tourist attractions like the New Jersey shore, and combat pollution and climate change through clean energy initiatives through rejoining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and eventually making NJ a leader in clean energy storage and electrifying transportation to cut greenhouse gas emissions, according to Phil Murphy’s website. Murphy also wants to make New Jersey the ninth state to legalize marijuana for recreational use.

Mr. Murphy will take office in January 2018.
