The Academy Awards, or “Oscars” is an award show presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizing categories such as best motion pictures, animated pictures, and actors in leading and supporting roles. The Oscars will air February 26th at 5:30PM PST.

For the upcoming Oscars comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the event. This year will mark the 89th Oscars and with it comes several nominations from various categories. The 2016 Oscars received negative responses for the lack of diversity shown in the leading and supporting roles that people were nominated for. A hashtag of #Oscarssowhite developed after nominees such as Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) were nominated. However, for the upcoming 89th Oscars there is more of a diverse group of individuals who are nominated.

There are 24 categories in total, however the main categories that are most recognized are Best Motion Pictures, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a leading Role, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. The nominations for Best Motion Picture are Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight. Nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role are Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic), Denzel Washington (Fences). Best Actress in a Leading Role nominees Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Emma Stone (La La Land), and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins). Actors nominated for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role are Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Dev Patel (Lion), and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals). The nominees for Best Actress in a Supporting Role are Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Nicole Kidman (Lion), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea).

The 89th Academy Awards will be one to remember as the best movies and stars go head to head to bring home an Oscar.
