Last month, on September 25th, the entire sports world woke up to see headlines that read “Jose Fernandez dead at 24.” This news shocked and hit home for many sports fans and players alike. Fernandez was one of the best Cuban-born pitchers to ever play Major League Baseball and there will never be anyone who plays with so much emotion and passion as Fernandez.

On the evening of September 24th, Fernandez and a couple friends decided to take his 31-foot boat out for a cruise on the water. Fernandez was not driving the boat when, at full speed, the boat crashed into a nearby jetty and all three passengers were killed on impact.

The Miami Marlins, the baseball club Fernandez was a member of, canceled the scheduled game against the Braves that day to mourn a man they loved and truly cherished to be around. Fernandez was a remarkable player and an even better teammate. He made the people around him better and was loved by his coaches and the organization. Fernandez was honored around the league through video tributes, moments of silence, and putting a “16”, Fernandez’ number, wherever they could write it to show respect and honor towards Jose. The following day, the Miami Marlins organization announced they would retire number 16 in Fernandez’ honor. Also, in the game that day against the Mets, every member of the Marlins wore Fernandez’ 16 jersey to honor him and pay tribute towards him.

A public service was held as well as a funeral procession for Fernandez on September 28th. Later, his ashes were scattered into the ocean in which he traveled and risked it all to come to this country from poverty in Cuba.

The sports world and country as a whole lost a great man that day. Fernandez’ girlfriend was also expecting a baby to be born soon. It is truly a tragedy and those who he met for the rest of their lives will remember Fernandez. Fernandez played with passion and emotion that is missing from today’s game. Players and people like him do not come around often. Jose Fernandez will forever be missed by Miami and baseball.
